New Voices Grant

KBUT Awarded National Media Grant

KBUT Community Radio has been awarded a New Voices media grant from J-Lab, the Institute for Interactive Journalism. The grant will provide up to $17,000 over 2 years to fund KBUT's multi-media project: Immigration- The View From Here. KBUT was honored to be 1 of only 10 grant award recipients from a record 312 entries submitted.

"These winners want to build new avenues producing local news and new ways to invite citizens to share particular expertise," said Jan Schaffer, director of J-Lab, which administers the New Voices program.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation funds the New Voices program. The Knight Foundation promotes excellence in journalism worldwide and interests in the vitality of 26 U.S. communities where the Knight brothers owned newspapers.

"The number of applicants signals the growing interest in the power of citizen media to create a sense of place for all kinds of communities," said Gary Kebbel, Knight's journalism program officer.

KBUT's project Immigration: The View from Here will explore the local impact of immigration, which has tripled in the last decade in the Gunnison Valley. KBUT will partner with the Gunnison Country Times and Crested Butte News to provide factual and comprehensive coverage of immigration issues. The station will also train local immigrants to become citizen journalists, relating their experiences and perspectives in their own voices. Stories will air on KBUT's daily news broadcasts and programming will include feature-length specials. Archived audio and additional content related to the immigration project will be posted online at www.kbut.org. The station will also share MP3 files of broadcast materials with Colorado’s 12 other community radio stations.

"New Voices has seeded some of the most exciting examples of journalism - and of active citizenship - in the United States today," said New Voices Advisory Board member Peter Levine, director of CIRCLE, The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement.

J-Lab helps news organizations and citizens use digital technologies to develop new ways for people to participate in public life. J-Lab supports and spotlights journalism innovations, interactive storytelling, citizen media, entrepreneurship and research.
