GEORGE SIBLEY TO PRESENT
AT LIBRARY ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF STATE OF COLORADOS’S SHARE OF THE COLORADO RIVER
George Sibley, author of the book Water Wranglers, will talk at the Old Rock Library in Crested Butte on November 15th at 7:00 pm. He will give an overview of the story of the development of the State of Colorado’s share of the Colorado River, and the effort of the Colorado River Water Conservation District to make sure that West Slope interests were protected in the course of that development.
The Upper Gunnison River and its tributaries – our mountain valleys – are part of the headwaters of the Colorado River, and thus an important part of this story. Sibley will focus on the important role this headwaters region has played in the development – and sometimes exploitation – of one of the world’s most heavily developed rivers.
Sibley has been writing about western issues since his start in journalism as editor of the Crested Butte Chronicle in the late 1960’s. As a freelance writer in the 1970s and 80s, he began to concentrate more on water issues; he ran Western’s Water Workshop for a number of years, and in 2007 he became a member of the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District board and the Gunnison Basin Roundtable.
His recently published book, Water Wranglers, available at the library for checkout (and also for sale at this event), tells the story of the Colorado River from a West Slope perspective. The event is free and open to the public.
