This fall, KBUT completed a major upgrade to our Gunnison signal by powering up from a mere 44 watts to a robust and rich 6,500 watts. This upgrade has been a great success, but there's still work to be done upgrading our Crested Butte signal this coming spring.

Of course, these upgrades do come with a price tag. Our Power Up Campaign has raised $84,000 to date, leaving just $14,000 remaining towards our goal. Please consider contributing to this important project today. Donations can be made easily and securely using our online form.

What is KBUT’s Power Up Campaign?

KBUT was awarded an FCC Construction Permit to upgrade our 44 watt translator on W Mountain to a 6,500-watt transmitter (a huge increase) and our 250 watt transmitter on Sunlight Ridge to 1,000 watts. These upgrades will greatly improve our signal strength and coverage, and secure KBUT's broadcast for generations to come.

What will the new signal do for the Gunnison Valley?

The signal upgrade will serve the entire Gunnison Valley with a stronger, clearer, more stable signal, allowing KBUT to engage the entire Gunnison Valley through improved broadcasting.

What will these upgrades cost?

Our project will cost $98,000. This is for broadcasting equipment, antennas, facility infrastructure upgrades and installation. We have raised approximately 25 percent of this amount and if we raise enough donations to match the $25,000 pledge from a local business we will have reached more than 75 percent of our campaign goal.

Does KBUT really need a strong signal?

The signal upgrade will greatly improve the strength of our current signal. The map illustrates the potential coverage provided by the project. The current signal area is shown in blue, while the pink area shows enhanced signal upgrade area. Click the map for a large, easily-readable version.

KBUT programming is broadcast over three separate frequencies, and because of the mountainous terrain, that broadcast is inconsistent and some areas in the Gunnison Valley do not receive our services at all. A Gunnison-based transmitter means a more consistent, stronger signal and gives KBUT a more stable place in the FCC hierarchy, thereby securing long-term broadcasting rights that cannot be usurped by another radio station.

We also believe this project continues our 25-year history of growing the Gunnison Valley’s access to public broadcasting through local, national and international programming. The FCC granted KBUT the Construction Permit because of its track record serving the Valley’s growing demand for community radio as well as its ability to meet the structural and technical requirements of broadcasting at 1,000 watts at Sunlight Ridge and 6,500 watts at W Mountain.

KBUT’s Mission Statement

KBUT Community Radio exists to enrich and unify the Gunnison Valley through information, entertainment and community involvement.
More information on the Power Up Campaign is available in this downloadable case statement (pdf, 2.4MB). If you have any questions about the Power Up Campaign, please contact General Manager Eileen Hughes at (970) 349-5225 ext. 11 or gm@kbut.org.
