When the Bureau of Reclamation flooded the Gunnison River to create a series of reservoirs between Gunnison and Montrose known as the Aspinall Unit, they made a promise to replace 26 miles of access to “class 1” fishing. According to Dennis Webb, a natural resources reporter for the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, after nearly half a century, some argue that the Bureau has never fulfilled that promise. I spoke with Webb over the phone, and he told me that well known fishing advocacy and conservation group is at the heart of the dispute.
