The 2019 Crested Butte Candidates Forum, presented by the Crested Butte News was broadcast live at the Center for the Arts Crested butte on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. Six candidates vied for five open seats on the Crested Butte Town Council.

The candidates included four current members of the Crested Butte Town Council. Laura Mitchell was elected in 2015 to a four year term. Will Dujardin was elected in 2017 to a two year term. Candace Bradley ran unsuccessfully for Town Council in 2017 and then in March of this year was appointed to fill the seat of Kent Cowherd who was stepping down. Finally the last incumbent running is Malika Magner who was appointed to the council in June after Jackson Petito stepped down.

Anne Moore and Mona Merril were the two newcomers to town elections. Also on stage that night, Jim Schmidt, a long time local politician currently serving his fourth stint as Mayor, a position for which he is running unopposed.

The event was moderated by Dennis B. Hall, who invited the candidates to give 90 second introductory statements, followed by a question and answer session with the audience, followed by a round of closing statements.

Ballots for all Gunnison County Residents should have arrived in mailboxes already. They must be returned by Tuesday, Nov. 5 either by mail or by dropping them by one of two voter service centers in the County. The first, in Gunnison at the Blackstock Government Building, 221 N. Wisconsin St. That’s also where you can get replacement ballots and register to vote. Starting Monday, Oct. 28, all those services will also be available at the Queen of All Saints Parish Hall in Crested Butte. 405 Sopris Ave. More information on the 2019 Coordinated election can be found here.
