In October of 1979, Dan Prater, a one-time Wichita Kansas native turned Crested Butian a decade earlier, died tragically and suddenly. Prater had been a booster of the local youth ski racing club, and the next winter friends of his held the inaugural Dan Prater Memorial Cup, a youth ski racing festival hosted by Crested Butte Mountain Resort.

Starting Friday, Feb. 21, the Prater Cup celebrates its 40th Anniversary. It’s become a major event in the USASA circuit, and a memorable one at that. KBUT spoke with Stephanie Prater, Dan’s daughter who helps to organize the event each year, about what makes the Prater Cup a special event.
